Grass Species as Raw Material for Pulp and Paper

چکیده

Paper has been made from grasses and other non-wood materials for over 1900 years. Wood is a relatively new papermaking fibre, only 100 years old. Today the commercial non-wood pulp production accounts for 6% of the global pulp production. The main source for the raw material is plants of the Gramineae family. Research on nonwood material has concentrated on grasses like Miscanthus, Phalaris, Sorghum and cereals. The fibre properties of grass species studied are similar to those of hardwood. A case study on reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) showed that the short-fibre fraction obtained from birch can be replaced with grass in fine paper.

Dissolving Pulp (alpha-cellulose) from Corn Stalk by Kraft Process

Corn stalk can be used as an alternative non-wood raw material to produce cellulosic dissolving grade pulp. In this work, the potential of corn stalk in the production of dissolving pulp (alpha-cellulose) was investigated. It was collect ed from a corn stalk farm of Kermanshah, Iran. The sequences of experimental work were: water and acid prehydrolysis at 160˚C for 30min, followed by Kraft pulp...

Integral valorization of two legumes by autohydrolysis and organosolv delignification.

Two woody legumes species (Chamaecytisus proliferus L.F. ssp. palmensis and Leucaena diversifolia) were evaluated for integrally exploitation. The raw material was subjected to autohydrolysis under variable operating conditions which provided a liquid phase rich in hemicellulose oligomers and a solid phase that was used to obtain cellulose pulp and paper sheets by using organosolv procedures. T...

Applying ANP for raw material supply in Iranian paper industry

The aim of this paper is to develop a strategic plan for selecting the best options for the supply of raw material to feed paper producing plants. The decision-making is examined within the framework of benefits, opportunities, costs, and risks (BOCR). A hierarchy is used to prioritize the BOCR, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) ratings approach. A control hierarchy is then created and...

Time Variations of Macrostickies and Extractable Stickies Concentrations in Deinking

The stickies content, both macrostickies and stickies extractable in a solvent, was determined for samples taken at short time intervals from deinking lines, producing deinked pulp for newsprint production. The study was carried out at three mills on different continents, with each having a different source of recycled paper as raw material. The short-term variations in extractable stickies in ...
